Bruce Cole: vocalist, sound engineer

  • Bruce Cole grew up in the Asheville and now lives in the green river community of Henderson county North Carolina He recently retired from duke power where he was a supervisor of the meter readers in several local areas Bruce is married to Julie and together they have several children Bruce is the sound engineer of the group as well as vocalists Bruce and Julie are active in the Hendersonville Pentecostal church. (Hendersonville Pentecostal Holiness Church-Podcast) he is the only member of the GRBwho lives in the Henderson county community of green river in which the band is named after

Walter Gordon banjo, bass vocals

  • Walter Gordon was born and raised in Saluda where his family has lived since before the civil war.  Walter's father Ed Gordon Ran a filling station in downtown Saluda for many years and brought Walter and his family to mountain page Baptist church where Walter learned about the lord. Walter also learned the banjo at an early age from his aunt and was saved later on! Walter felt the call to preach shortly after he was saved and has been preaching now for nearly 40 years.  Walter and his wife Sharon have three children and several grandchildren He is currently the pastor of FORK CREEK Baptist church in Saluda NC/ WALTER RETIRED FROM THE POLK COUNTY SCHOOL SYSTEMS   
     

Fred Lyons: lead guitar, mandolin, dobro

  • Fred Lyons was born and raised in the Mt. Airy NC area which was the fictional setting of the Andy griffin show Fred's uncle Tommy Jarrell was a well known old time old time musician from that area and his music is celebrated annual each year in Mt. Airy.  As a youth Fred Lyons and his family moved to Henderson county and Fred began playing multiple instruments in several local bands .  Fred retired from general electric lives in Hendersonville with his wife ,he has three children and several grandchildren ,one son Ritchie Lyons plays piano carrying on the families musical legacy. Fred and his family attend the Upward Worship Center in Henderson county,WHERE FREDAND RITCHIE ARE CHURCH MUSICIANS .

James ”coot” McDowell, tenor vocals, rhythm guitar

  • James  coot McDowell comes from a small Henderson county community of crab creek ,it was once stated from his pastor that the ''McDowell's from that area were born with a guitar in one hand and a hunting rifle in the other '' Coot' had a block mason business for many years which his sons and grandsons continue ,with occasional help from Coot .COOT regulary hunts bear and deer around crab creek and is a member of Crab Creek Baptist church He has several children and grandchildren. Ireland brown: bass guitar

  • Ireland brown was born in the Avery creek community of north Henderson county he entered the service and later returned to Henderson County and moved to Fruitland. Ireland became a mechanic and; later a automotive instructor at Blue Ridge community college in Hendersonville.
    Ireland was also a former amateur pilot and has built several experimental aircraft he and his wife dot live in Fruitland and have one daughter and one grandson, they attend Gethsemane Baptist church in hendersonville .ireland continues to work on cars and aircraft as a hobby

James Metcalf: vocals, guitar

  • James is the son of rev Jimmy Metcalf and has 9 brothers and sister James lived in several different states due to his fathers pastor ships growing up but returned to the old Metcalf homestead to live after high school James is employed by WJFJ radio as a DJ in Columbus NC and was voted by the fans of southern gospel music as a top ten small market DJ for 2004 and 2005 in Singing News magazine. James also is a songwriter having had songs recorded by local and national groups including Mike Upright, the Principles, In His will Greg and Teresa Watson, Furman Boyce and Harmony Express ,and others ,James' song ''The Great Physicians Hand" was included on the Principle's album ''Snow Covered Mound '' which was nominated in gospel music associations dove awards for bluegrass album of the year in 2005. James is the music director of Fork Creek Baptist church in Saluda and resides in Saluda as his family has since the early 1800's.

                      GRB MEMBERS OF THE PAST

  • C.A.Morgan (past member) a carpenter who played MANDOLIN AND GUITAR for the grb also played fiddle was known for picking every chance he got.CA played with the Southern Mountaineers for over ten years and played for his own group picking and pounding (which included CA, CHARLES JONES, PAT BALLARD AND JAMES METCALF )as well as the green river boys for almost a year/CA died in his sleep in 2006 ,the green river boys sent him a guitar shaped flower arrangement for his funeral

  • CHARLES Jones .original banjo player for the group started a weekly get together in his home which led to the formation of the green river boys ,at one time CA, Bruce and Charles all went to church together ,the three were joined by Fred and Ireland and later coot at Charles' home which led to the formation of the green river boys and their first appearances at the Saluda truck stops restaurant which was called Saluda family rest, city club grill and now Shaffer's over the years
